Although first used for indoor space heating in 1928 heat pumps as we know them today began getting attention as an option for American homes in the 1950s and 60s and gained ground when the 1970s oil crisis spotlighted the benefits of using electricity over fossil fuels.
These earlier systems would run full blast while not producing as hot of temperatures as conventional systems and could not operate efficiently at lower temperatures. But as time and technology progressed, heat pumps advanced with variable-capacity systems in the early 2000’s that allowed the system to maintain set temperature points while using minimal electricity to produce hotter supply temperatures at very cold outside air temperatures. What is a heat pump? In short, it’s an air conditioner running in reverse. In the summer your air conditioner actually “removes” the heat from your home and transfers it outside. When you have a heat pump system there is a reversing valve that reverses this process and takes heat from the cold air outside (and yes there is heat in the air when it’s cold outside) and transfers to inside your home without the direct use of fossil fuels.
What are mini-split ductless systems? It’s a ductless system with an indoor and outdoor unit that doesn’t need ductwork and uses electrical wiring and tubing that gets hot and cold air into the space you need.
Mini-split systems have been used for room additions like a sunroom, finished basement, bonus rooms or garage bedroom addition.
